Frequently Asked Questions
What is Partnership for Success (PFS)?
Partnership for Success (PFS) is a fully funded academic enrichment program created for underserved Pasadena Unified School District students. It is designed to help students, many of whom are first-generation and students of color, achieve academic goals, build confidence, and prepare for future success.
How long has the program been around?
Founded in 1990, Partnership for Success began as a collaboration between Pasadena schools; Chandler, Mayfield Junior, Polytechnic, Westridge, and the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD).The program was created to address educational disparities for public school students. Over the years, the program has brought together dedicated teachers, alumni, and students to provide a valuable summer enrichment experience.
What does the PFS program offer?
PFS spans nine consecutive summers, beginning the summer before 5th grade and continuing through the summer before college. Each five-week summer session is offered at no cost to the students. The program includes academic enrichment courses in subjects such as math, science, reading, history, art, and technology, along with field trips and community engagement. As students progress, additional opportunities such as targeted college counseling, campus tours, college credit courses, and career exploration are provided.
What is the scholar selection and graduation criteria?
Students are selected for PFS based on nominations by their teachers and school leaders, who consider academic potential, leadership qualities, good attendance, and financial need. Being chosen as a PFS Scholar recognizes a student’s hard work and promise. To graduate from the program, students are expected to attend all nine summer sessions, maintain good academic standing and behavior, and complete the required courses, earning them a $1,000 scholarship upon graduation.
Who funds PFS?
PFS is a community-based initiative supported by partner schools, foundations, and individual donors. Their contributions help ensure that the program remains fully funded and accessible to every student who qualifies.
What is the mission and impact?
Our mission is to harness the power of education to transform lives and strengthen communities. The program’s impact is evident in its high retention rate, as over 90% of students return each summer, and in the success of its graduates, who all complete high school and gain college acceptance. Each graduate also receives a $1,000 scholarship to help with college expenses.
What do students experience?
Students in the program enjoy a supportive environment that encourages both academic and personal growth. They benefit from a network of teachers, mentors, and alumni who offer guidance and support. The program provides a structured and welcoming setting where students can explore new subjects, participate in engaging activities, and build meaningful relationships.
How many scholars does PFS serve?
PFS serves over 400 students from various Pasadena public schools. The program is committed to providing a consistent, year-after-year opportunity that encourages academic progress and personal development for each participant.
Which independent schools are involved?
The program is hosted across four independent schools that cater to different grade levels. Girls attend Westridge School and boys attend Chandler School for 5th and 6th grades, followed by Mayfield Junior School for 7th and 8th grades. For 9th grade through the summer before college, students continue their journey at Polytechnic School.
